Shopify Store Migrations: How to Plan a Move and Protect SEO

Moving an online shop to Shopify involves more than transferring products. Shopify store migrations can affect customer accounts, order records, integrations, search visibility and the everyday processes your team relies on.

A structured migration plan helps identify what must move, what needs rebuilding and what should be tested before customers reach the new store.

Start with a complete inventory

Before choosing a migration method, document the existing store.

Include products, variants, images, collections, customer records, orders, blog posts, landing pages and downloadable resources. Also list connections to accounting, fulfilment, reviews, subscriptions and email marketing systems.

For each item, record:

  • Where the information currently lives.
  • Whether it must move to Shopify.
  • Which transfer method will be used.
  • Who will validate the result.
  • Whether any functionality needs replacing.

Do not assume that transferring a product catalogue also recreates your integrations or customer experience.

Understand data limitations early

Different types of information require different migration methods.

Shopify states that customer passwords cannot be migrated from another online store using a customer CSV. Order information also cannot be imported through that customer CSV. The customer account approach and any historical order transfer therefore need separate planning. Shopify’s customer import guidance

Identify these limitations before announcing the launch. If customers need to take action to access their accounts, prepare clear instructions and test the process.

Review sample imports before transferring the full dataset. Check variant associations, images, stock values, customer details and any custom fields your business uses.

Make SEO part of the migration plan

Create a record of existing URLs before switching platforms. Combine a website crawl with available sitemap, analytics and Search Console information.

Prioritise pages that attract organic visits, generate sales or have useful external links. Then map each old URL to the most relevant destination on the Shopify store.

For example, an existing page for a particular waterproof jacket should lead to its replacement product page. Sending every old product URL to the homepage creates a poor experience.

Google recommends permanent server-side redirects for permanent URL changes and warns against redirecting many unrelated pages to an irrelevant destination. Google’s site migration guidance

Preserve useful content

A platform move is an opportunity to improve the store, but wholesale content changes can make the impact harder to diagnose.

Review high-performing pages carefully before rewriting them. Preserve valuable product information, buying guidance and descriptive headings where they still serve customers.

Check the new pages for:

  • Accurate titles and descriptions.
  • Correct product and collection relationships.
  • Working internal links.
  • Appropriate canonical URLs.
  • Unintended indexing restrictions.
  • Missing images or downloadable files.

Shopify supports importing URL redirects by CSV. Once implemented, test the old addresses and confirm that each reaches its intended destination. Shopify’s migration checklist

Prepare a controlled launch

Choose a launch period that suits your trading pattern and staff availability.

If the existing store continues receiving orders during preparation, define how recent orders, customer changes and inventory updates will be reconciled. The first data export may be out of date by launch day.

Assign responsibility for domain changes, payment checks, fulfilment testing, redirect validation and customer communications.

Test representative purchases and operational workflows. Include the delivery destinations, discount scenarios and payment methods your business actually uses.

Monitor after the move

A migration is not complete when the new homepage appears.

Monitor broken URLs, indexing, organic landing-page traffic, checkout behaviour and fulfilment issues. Google notes that rankings can fluctuate while a moved site is recrawled and reindexed; no responsible provider can guarantee zero movement. Google’s site migration guidance

Keep a dated launch record so that unexpected changes can be investigated against a clear timeline.
